The Fort Chipewyan Elders Care Centre is a LEED silver project which involved the conversion, expansion, and transformation of an existing nursing station into a unique care facility with a significant holistic and cultural focus.
The facility incorporates many of the tribal attributes which reflect the residence background including ceremonial wood burning fireplace tipi, and living wall and water features. Elements of technology were also including in the design including adjustable vanities for resident specific needs, isolation rooms for management of communicable diseases and rehabilitation and medical treatment amenities. The facility is also equipped with a full service kitchen for residence use.
Mechanical systems were carefully selected to allow for residence environmental control, and heat recovery ventilation systems used for achieve the desired energy performance benchmarks. The mechanical systems are a combination of conventional and high efficient equipment and is currently pending LEED Silver certification.
